If you have seen a mouse in your home, you likely have more than one. If you do not take steps to take care of this problem, your home can become infested with mice very quickly. To prevent this from happening, keep reading for tips to get the mice out and some tips to help prevent them from coming back again.

Get Mice Out

The first thing to do is find out where the mice are coming in. Look for any gaps or holes that may be in the wall, near baseboards, etc. If found, seal these things up so mice cannot get into your home. Mice will also enter your home through the attic, basement, and crawlspace. Look for gaps around doors and windows.

The main way to get mice out of your home is by using bait. There are many types of baits available for you to purchase. First, you should decide if you want to kill the mice or catch and release them. If you do want to kill them, there are snap traps you can set by placing bait on the trap. Bait like cheese, peanut butter, etc. works great to attract the mouse. Once they step on the trap it snaps and breaks their neck. There are electronic traps that will electrocute the mice to kill them. You can also purchase catch-and-release traps to release the mice somewhere away from your home.

Prevent Mice from Coming Back

Once you close up entry points, there are many more things you can do to prevent mice. First, use a garbage can that has a sealed lid and take your garbage out when it becomes full. If you have pets, mice can chew through dog and cat food bags easily. Place their food in storage containers with a tightly sealed lid.

Mice will get into cabinets to find food. If you have food in your cabinet that is in boxes — such as cereals, pasta, etc. — mice can easily chew through these. Place the food in sealed storage containers instead. Wipe down your countertops at night before you go to bed and sweep the kitchen floor to remove food crumbs and other debris.

Hire a pest control company to take care of your mouse problem if you continue to see them in your home. They have techniques they use to get rid of all of them. The contractor can also help you make changes to prevent them from coming back.
