Many insects are a nuisance but will not actually cause any damage. There are some insects, however, that can cause a lot of damage to a home. One of these insects is termites. Keep reading to learn a few signs that you have termites and what you can do about it. 

Signs of Termites

Termites are dangerous because they eat your home's wood. If you have a lot of termites in your home, they can cause structural damage, which will lead to expensive repairs. If you have wood lying outside, termites will also eat this. Because of this, remove any wood or anything similar that is outside.

If you have windows that are difficult to open, this can be due to termites eating wood frames. Knock on your walls, and if you hear hollow sounds, this can be due to termites eating dry wood. Go outside and look for swarms of termites that may be swarming close to your home. Termites come out of their nest and mate and then search for a place where they can have their babies and set up a termite colony. When these swarming termites find the right place, they will twist until their wings fall off because they will not need to fly ever again. Look for piles of termite wings as this is a big clue you have had a few swarms. 

Look for mud tubes that are about the size of a pencil. Look around the bottom of your foundation, garage, shed, or any other type of building you may have outside. If you see mud tubes, there is likely a termite nest underneath it. The termites create this tube so they do not have to go outside, but can instead crawl from the nest through the tube into your home.

Because termites are dangerous to a home, do not try to take care of this problem on your own. Instead, contact a pest control company in your area. The pest control company can spray the inside and outside of your home. They can also use baits which they bury in the ground. There is poison inside the bait that attracts termites. When the pests eat the poison, the termites soon die.
