Moles are mammals that are part of the group called insectivores. While they may be small in size, moles are considered to be very annoying pests, and they can cause a lot of damage to a yard when they take up residence on a property. When there is a mole in the area, they will dig a network of tunnels in order to find insects, grubs, and worms to eat, which can ruin lawns and plants, while also causing lasting problems to root systems. If you find evidence of one or more moles living in your yard, it is important to take action quickly to get the issue under control. One of the best things that you can do is use mole traps. Use the following tips to help you use mole traps to get rid of moles.

Observe and Find Patterns

Moles can burrow deep underground and spend a lot of time in their tunnels searching for food. Thus, you may find evidence that there are moles in your yard, but you may not see moles very often. Thus, if you are planning to place mole traps, it is important to take the time to carefully observe your yard and look for patterns of where the tunnels are being created. When you observe the mole's activity, you will better be able to determine which tunnels are fresh and being used, and which ones are older.

Place Your Traps

After watching the tunneling activity in your yard, you will be prepared to set your mole traps. If you have two or three new tunnels in your yard, it is a good idea to collapse the opening of each tunnel; the next day, you can determine which tunnel is being used by seeing which one has a fresh opening. When you have determined which tunnel is currently being used, place the mole trap at the opening.

Dispose of Trapped Moles

While there are some live traps for moles, most mole traps are designed to kill moles in your yard. Once your mole trap is in place, you will need to check it regularly to see if a mole has been caught. When you find a mole that has been trapped and killed, make sure that you dispose of it properly as quickly as possible. Most mole traps make it very easy to release a dead mole and throw it away in your outdoor garbage can.
