Of all the household pests that may find their way into your home, termites are one that you definitely do not want to see. They are an embarrassment to you if others see them, and they can cause a lot of expensive destruction in your home. These tips will help you get them out of your home for good.

Find The Den

Termites love to eat things that are made out of wood, since it is a source of cellulose for them. Homes that have parts built with wood, like the foundation and decks, are giving termites an invitation to come in and eat. You'll need to perform occasional checks around your home for termite dens.

Pay attention to wood that looks weak and brittle, and look in the dirt surrounding your home for tubes that they have created to travel through. The tunnels may even be on structures made of wood. Once you follow these tunnels back to their den, you can take steps to get rid of it and the termites inside.

Bait The Den

Termite bait can be placed on a cellulose product, such as cardboard, to trick the termites into digesting it. A boric acid bate will affect the termite's nervous system, which eventually shuts it down completely. Boric acid will also dehydrate the termites, causing them to die due to them being very sensitive to humid environments. The bait should be placed close to the nest, as well as in paths that they travel in. Keep applying boric acid to cardboard to keep the bait lethal.

Use Nematodes

An alternative to using a chemical to kill the termites is to use a killer worm known as the nematode. It's a microscopic worm that is placed in the path of the termites, effectively infecting and killing the termites once they make contact with them. Nematodes act similar to a plague, by being carried to the nest and infecting other termites. This method is highly effective.

Draw Termites Away

Once you take steps to eradicate the termites, you need to take preventative steps to stop them from coming back. If you have firewood next to your home, move it far away so that termites are not attracted to your home. Try to replace outdoor wooden structures with ones made of concrete, and even use nematodes as a preventative measure to fight off termites that haven't infested your home yet.

When you can't get rid of those termites on your home, contact a local company that provides pest control services to help.
